Chester B. McLaughlin, JD

Elder law focuses on the legal needs of seniors, disabled persons and their families. Although elder law is defined by the clients served rather than the legal issues involved, some of the specialized issues involving older clients include funding long term care needs, estate planning, advanced planning for incapacity, and guardianship and conservatorship proceedings.  Many elder law attorneys also do special needs trusts planning for children and young adults with disabilities. From our inception, we have limited our practice to the areas of elder and mental health law. Our tradition is excellence. That tradition is built on our dedication to meeting the needs of seniors and their families through the creative use of legal tools and techniques in a caring and compassionate manner.

Chester B. McLaughlin, JD has been practicing law in Arizona since 1983 and limits his practice to elder law, special needs trust planning, estate planning for clients of any age, probate and trust administration and mental health law.  Mr. McLaughlin is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a member of its public policy committee.  He is also a member of the Arizona Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and chairs the Arizona Chapter public policy committee. He also served as President and Vice President of the Arizona Chapter and received an award for outstanding Chapter Member for 1995. He is a former secretary and member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association as well as a former co-chair of its Public Policy Committee. In addition, Mr. McLaughlin served on the Governor's Council on Aging and was chair of the Alzheimer's Advisory Committee to the Council. Mr. McLaughlin is a member and former board member and former co-chair of the Mental Health and Elder Services Section of the Arizona Bar Association and a member of the Probate and Trust Section of the Arizona State Bar. He is the Chair of the Patient Self Determination Act Committee of the State Bar, which is empowered to draft a summary of the law regarding the rights of persons to accept/refuse medical treatment and to formulate advance directives. Mr. McLaughlin is a frequent lecturer on long term care planning, elder law, guardianship and conservatorship, special needs trusts, estate planning, probate and mental health law for lawyers, financial planners, accountants, insurance agents and brokers, healthcare providers, and non-professionals.
